BEAUMONT, Texas – Winners of four straight and seven of their last nine, the Lamar University baseball team will look to continue its current streak Tuesday when it hosts Prairie View A&M. The game against the Panthers, which is slated for a 6 p.m. start from Vincent-Beck Stadium, is one of just two remaining midweek home games left of the 2023 schedule (LU closes out the season with a three-game series against Houston Christian at home).
The Cardinals posted impressive numbers during the current win streak with a .361 batting average with 25 RBIs and 28 runs scored in a sweep of Southeastern Louisiana to go along with a midweek victory at Houston. On the mound, LU has recorded a 2.50 ERA during that time while holding opponents to a .256 batting average.
More importantly, the Cardinals sweep of Southeastern Louisiana put them right back in the Southland Conference chase moving from eighth in the standings into a two-way tie for sixth, just 1.5 games back of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, and just two games back of the league leaders, UIW.
PVAMU has dropped five of its last eight games, but they have split their last two conference series. The Panthers come to Beaumont looking to bounce back from consecutive losses and improve upon a 17-26 (.395) overall record but are third in the SWAC West Division standings with a 13-7 (.650) overall record.
The Cardinals have dominated the overall series, historically, with a 45-3 (.938) record, including a near flawless 36-1 (.973) mark in Beaumont. Big Red has won 12-straight in the series, a streak that dates back to the 2009 season. The series began in 1988.
Tuesday's game is set for a 6 p.m. first pitch with will be streamed live on ESPN+.
