FRISCO, Texas - The Southland Conference unveiled their 2021-2022 Women's Basketball All-Academic Conference First and Second teams as unveiled by league officials on Friday morning. Lamar University's women's basketball team had two members selected by the conference as Akasha Davis was honored as both a first teamer and the student-athlete of the year while Sabria Dean was selected as a second teamer.

The All-Academic teams consist of five members on both first and second team. Of the 10 schools in the conference, only seven had representatives on the teams and LU was one of three to have two.

To be nominated, each nominee must have 1) a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) through the semester prior to the sports' championship; 2) completed at least ONE full academic year at the nominating institution prior to the season in which the nomination occurs (true freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible); and 3) participated in at least 50 percent of the team's games during the most recently completed season.

To qualify as a nominee for Student Athlete of the Year, each nominee must 1) have earned at least a 3.2 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale at the nominating institution and 2) have demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two (2) years of athletics competition, including the current season, at the nominating institution.

Earning Student Athlete of the Year honors and a first team spot on the All-Academic squad, Davis recorded a 3.81 GPA while majoring in Public Health-Health Administration. This past season, Davis led LU in scoring with 452 points (14.6 ppg), rebounds (8.8 rpg), which were both third and fourth respectively in the conference. Davis led the conference with a 61.4% field goal percentage and was second on the team with 22 block shots. She also recorded 22 double-figure point games, which featured 12 double-doubles to make it 18 in her career. Her play got her first team honors from the conference, who also put her on the all-tournament team.

Majoring in Psychology and having a cumulative GPA of 3.66, Dean was selected as a second team member. Second on the team in scoring with 420 points (13.1 ppg), Dean was the only Cardinal to play and start all 32 games. Adding 120 rebounds, she stole the ball 53 times, which was most on the team and was second on the team with 58 made three-pointers and 96 assists while blocking four shots.

This year saw LU go to great heights winning 20 games for the most wins since the 2018-19 season and the most in the Aqua Franklin era. With a 12-6 conference record, the Cardinals finished as the #3 seed and would ride momentum into the conference championship game after wins over McNeese and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
