BEAUMONT, Texas - After seeing their doubleheader games with Texas Southern postponed to a later date, Lamar University's softball team sets out to College Station for a showdown with the Texas A&M Aggies this upcoming Tuesday. This game will help LU prepare for their next home conference series against rival McNeese.
PREVIOUSLY
LU hosted their first home series of the year against Southeastern Louisiana. While they dropped the first two games despite a home run by
Cameron Niedenthal in game 1 and a four-RBI performance by
Kaylee Ancelot in game two, the Cardinals would use a six-run sixth inning to rally back and beat the Lions 6-2. Ancelot would drive in two runs while
Aaliyah Ruiz earned the win with a complete game striking out six batters.
Sam Bean had a seven-hit series going seven-of-11 (.636).
STATS UPDATE
Thanks to her seven hits in the last series, Bean now leads LU in batting average (.367), runs (21), hits (33), total bases (54), and homers (four) all from the leadoff position. With six RBI last weekend, Ancelot is now in front of every Cardinal with 21 RBI while
Hayley Freudenberg has nine doubles and
Aleka Xayaseng has three triples to lead the team.
Karyana Mitchell still leads LU's pitching staff in ERA (4.75), innings pitched (59.0 IP), and strikeouts (40) while she and Ruiz are tied with four wins each.
ROAD TO 300
Now with the all-time program strikeout record in her hands, Ruiz will look to continue adding to the record as she vies to become the first Cardinal pitcher to strikeout 300 batters. With six strikeouts in her last start, Ruiz now stands 11 strikeouts away.
SCHEDULE
Tuesday, Mar. 28
5:00 p.m. @ Texas A&M
OPPONENT INFO: Texas A&M
Series Record: TAMU 15-0 (16th Meeting)
Last Meeting: TAMU 3-2 (4/27/22)
Last year, the Cardinals nearly overcame a 3-0 deficit to the Aggies in College Station. The Cardinals would score one run in the sixth on an error off the bat of
Sydney Norton while a bases loaded hit by pitch in the seventh drew them closer at 3-2 before TAMU recorded the final out.
Nicolette Ramirez, Ancelot, and
Felixia Hinojosa would each record a hit while in a losing effort, Ruiz went 6.0 innings striking out six batters.
The Aggies are 19-11 after going 3-1 last week with a 6-3 win over Louisiana Tech and taking two-of-three from No. 11 Kentucky. Julia Cottrill leads the Aggies in both batting average (.392), hits (29), doubles (eight), and RBI (19) while both Trinity Cannon (.368 BA, 25 runs, 28 hits, five homers) and Keely Williams (.328 BA, 16 runs, 21 hits, three homers) have each driven in 18 RBI. In the circle, Emily Leavitt has a team-leading 60 strikeouts, 2.61 ERA, and six wins while Emiley Kennedy (2.72 ERA, 54.0 IP, 56 Ks) and Shaylee Ackerman (2.90 ERA, 51 K's) have five wins each.
