BEAUMONT, Texas – After a successful opening weekend to the 2023 season, Lamar University now turns its attention to two midweek contests against Texas A&M and Kansas State. The contest versus the Aggies will be Tuesday in College Station, followed by a Wednesday evening game against Kansas State in Beaumont.
The Cardinals got off to a strong start sweeping Oakland in a three-game series over the weekend. If the three wins weren't exciting enough, the Cardinals took the first two games in walk-off fashion, including a 10
th home run off the bat of
Ryan Snell to win opening night.
LU now looks to carry that momentum over into their first midweek games of the season. Although it's just the first week of 2023, the games against A&M and K-State will serve as the only time this season that LU will play two midweek games in the same week.
The Aggies also jumped out to a 3-0 start after sweeping Seattle. Texas A&M outscored the Redhawks, 28-7, and posted their win Sunday in eight innings.
Tuesday's contest will mark the 43
rd meeting between the two schools with A&M holding a 35-7 (.833) all-time record. Big Red heads to College Station looking for their second road win all-time in series history (1-22) and also looking to end a stretch of nine consecutive losses to the Aggies. The Cardinals last win in the series came during the 2000 season when they recorded an 8-5 decision in Beaumont.
The Aggies are expected to send Wyatt Tucker (6-2, 210, Jr., RHP) to the mound, while LU is expected to counter with senior
Quinn Waterhouse (0-0/0.00), a 6-4, 210 left-handed pitcher who transferred in from SIU-Edwardsville. Waterhouse pitched a scoreless inning of relief in the Cardinals' victory over Oakland Sunday.
Following the game at Texas A&M, the Cardinals will return home to host Kansas State Wednesday. The Wildcats are currently 3-0 on the season but wrapping up a season-opening four-game series at Stephen F. Austin Monday afternoon. K-State has scored at least seven runs in all of their first three games.
Wednesday's game will be just the 10
th meeting between the two schools and the first since 2008. The series, which originated in 1967, has seen the Wildcats win the last four meetings and six of nine overall. All of the previous meetings have been played in Beaumont. Starters have not been announced for Wednesday's contest.
