Cardinals Dominate Former Conference Foes

| By:
Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Lamar University jumped out to overwhelming lead and never looked back knocking former Southland Conference foe, Abilene Christian, 4-3, Saturday morning in Abilene. With the victory, the Cardinals move to within a match of .500 on the season (3-4).

Big Red took the doubles point by rattling off wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles for the first lead of the day. LU also had the lead on court one but the match was halted after the point was awarded.

The Cardinals quickly reset for the singles competition and put ACU back on its heels, but it wasn't easy. Three courts were forced to a third set (two were finished) and court 5 played a long tiebreak in the opening set.

Freshman Megan Do made it a 2-0 lead with her straight sets victory over Paula Garrote, 6-3, 7-5. Junior Ana Jolic made it a 3-0 lead when she bested Olivia Sears, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2, on the No. 3 spot.

With Jolic's victory in hand, the Cardinals needed just one more singles victory to take the overall match. The Wildcats attempted to make it close with wins on the next two courts but the deficit was too much to overcome. Senior Femke Tjon-A-Joe finished things off with an impressive, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, victory over ACU's Masha Vrsalovic.

The Cardinals return to action Sunday to face New Mexico. The match against the Lobos will begin at 9 a.m.
