BEAUMONT, Texas – After a tough start to the season, the Lamar University women's tennis team is showing signs of turning things around following an impressive 6-1 victory over UT Rio Grande Valley last week. Big Red has now split its last four outings.
Lamar will now head to Abilene, Texas for a couple of non-conference matches, including one against a former conference opponent. LU will look to move within a match of the .500 mark when they step on the court to face Abilene Christian and will turn around the following day to square off against New Mexico. Both matches will take place at the John T.L. Jones Tennis Complex.
The Wildcats are 4-5 (.444) on the season but have dropped consecutive matches and three of their last four. Big Red trails the all-time series to ACU – a former league opponent in both the WAC and Southland Conference – 3-10 (.231) but the Cardinals have split the last two meetings with ACU.
The match against the Wildcats is slated for a 9 a.m. start Saturday. Lamar will then turn right back around and face New Mexico 24 hours later. The Lobos are a perfect 3-0 on the season having not yet surrendered a point this year. UNM has outscored its opponents, 18-0, during that stretch but will face ACU and Tyler Junior College before stepping on the court to face Big Red.
Sunday's contest against the Lobos will mark the second time the two schools have squared off in women's tennis, but it's also the second consecutive season to the two have met. Last season, the Lobos recorded a 4-0 victory in Beaumont. Sunday's match is also set to begin at 9 a.m.
