FRISCO, Texas - With postseason play approaching, Lamar University's soccer team is set to enter the Southland Conference tournament as the number one seed. One of the players looking to make an impact for this tournament run is
Cariel Ellis and the SLC has tabbed her as the final Offensive Player of the Week for the 2023 campaign.
Against Southeastern Louisiana on Friday, Ellis keyed LU's four goal first-half by scoring twice on her first two shots in the match's first five minutes. It took 27 seconds into the match for Ellis to strike the first shot into the goal for an early 1-0 lead. Then, at the five minute mark, Ellis struck the second goal to double Big Red's advantage. The graduate student from Madison, Mississippi tallied an assist in the 31st minute for
Isela Ramirez's goal.
At the end of the regular season, Ellis leads the Cardinals with seven goals while she is second in assists (five) and points (19). She also leads both the squad and the conference with five game-winning goals. Her two goal output was the first multi-goal game this season and third of her Big Red career.
As the number one seed for the SLC tournament, the Cardinals have the luxury of not starting their tournament run until Friday at 7:00 p.m. There, they will take on the winner of fourth seeded Northwestern State and fifth seeded Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
