BEAUMONT, Texas - Lamar University goalkeeper Nicole Panis continues to add to her decorated career in Cardinal Red. On Friday night, she set another school record for most career saves in program history with 329. This mark passes Bailey Fontenot, who ended her LU career with 328.
The record was broken in the 51st minute after Texas A&M-Corpus Christi fired a free kick shot that Panis was able to secure. This was the only save of the game as Panis and the Cardinal defense held the Islanders to a 1-0 victory. This was not only a school record eleventh clean sheet of the season, but Panis also tied a new single-season program mark with 10 shutouts matching alongside Lauren Lovejoy in 2017.
Already considered among the best goalkeepers in program history, Panis has set her mark for the Cardinals in her four seasons in Beaumont. She has set school records in saves (329), wins (45), shutouts (30.5), games played (68), games started (67), and minutes played (5997:26). The native of Opmeer, Netherlands has also achieved various accolades for her play including SLC First Team (2022) and Second team (2020), SLC All-Tournament team (2022), four SLC Goalkeeper of the Weeks, SLC Goalkeeper of the Year (2022), Top Drawer National Player and Team of the Week, Western Athletic Conference Second Team (2021) and WAC Defensive Player of the Week.
This season, Panis currently leads the SLC Conference in goals against average (.480) and shutouts per game (.588) while she is third in save percentage (.869). She also had a memorable highlight recording a season-high 13 saves against then #17 Xavier in a 1-0 upset victory, which would extend a winning streak that reached 11 games, the second best in program history.Â
Having clinched a share of the conference regular season championship, Panis and LU will look to win it outright as they will host Southeastern Louisiana this Friday night at 7:00 p.m at the LU Soccer Complex.Â
