BEAUMONT, Texas – Lamar University women's tennis was originally scheduled to open the 2023 season Friday against DePaul at home, followed by a match at Rice (Saturday) and then back home to host Sam Houston. Due to the forecasted weather in the Houston area, Rice and the Cardinals elected to move their match to Thursday afternoon.
Big Red enters the 2023 spring season looking to improve upon a 10-11 (.476) overall record last season that saw them go 1-4 in Western Athletic Conference play. The Cardinals now kick off the season against an instate rival looking for their first win in series history (0-19).
LU will then return home to host DePaul Friday at 2 p.m. at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center. Friday's match against the Blue Demons will be the first meeting between the two schools on the court. Friday's match will serve as the season opener for DePaul.
The Cardinals then close out the weekend Sunday against an old conference rival in Sam Houston. SHSU enters the week with a 2-0 record but will face Texas A&M in College Station Friday before traveling to Beaumont. The Cardinals lead the all-time series between the two schools owning a 22-10 (.688) all-time record, which includes an 11-4 (.733) mark at home.
Both Friday and Sunday's matches will begin at 2 p.m. from the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center on College Street.
