Box Score HOUSTON, Texas – Lamar University moved up its season opener from Friday to Thursday afternoon as the Cardinals traveled to Rice but dropped a 7-0 decision to a very tough Owls' squad.
After taking the doubles point, Rice won the opening set on all six courts. Freshman
Margarita Nikonorova battled back in her second set on court No. 5 after dropping the first. Nikonorova fell in the opening set, 6-1, but battled back to take a 6-3 decision in the second.
Unfortunately, the Cardinals came up short in their bid to split sets on the other five courts as Rice held on in each match for the shutout victory.
Big Red now makes the trip back up I-10 to host DePaul Friday. The first meeting between the two schools in women's tennis will take place at the Beaumont Municipal Tennis Center and will begin at 2 p.m.
