Cards Bounce Back, Win Thriller

| By:
Box Score STEPHENVILLE, Texas – After a disappointing outcome Saturday, the Lamar University women's tennis team (10-9/1-3 WAC) battled back to win a thriller over Stephen F. Austin Sunday morning. The Cardinals took the doubles point and won three singles matches to lock up the victory, 4-3.

The Cardinals got the first victory of the morning from No. 3 doubles, but SFA followed with a win on court No. 1. With the first two matches split, that put the pressure on No. 2 doubles and the team of Jayci Wong and Ana Jolic came through with a 6-2 victory to snag the point.

The momentum didn't last long as the Ladyjacks managed to tie the game up at 1 with a victory at the No. 6 position. Freshman Noelia Lorca managed to put the Cardinals back out in front with her straight-sets winner on court No. 3.

Unfortunately, SFA responded by taking the next two matches and claimed a 3-2 lead. With their backs against the wall, the Cardinals flipped the script against SFA. Junior Elena Tairyan started the rally by taking a three-setter from the Ladyjacks' Anastassia Kouchnareva. After dropping the opening set, 6-4, Tairyan battled back to take the final two sets 6-4, 6-1.

With Tairyan's victory in the books, all focus was turned to sophomore Elena Rubio on court No. 5. All the Murcia, Spain native did was bounce from a tiebreak loss in the second set to win the match, 6-3, 6-7 (8-10), 6-1, over SFA's Lucy Furness.

The Cardinals return to action Sunday, April 10, when they travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on UTSA. The match against the Roadrunners is set to begin at 11 a.m.
