Cards End Seven-Game Road Stretch With a Loss

| By:
Box Score WACO, Texas – A seven-game stretch away from the Golden Triangle ended Monday evening with a setback at Baylor. The Bears defeated LU, 5-1, at the Baylor Ballpark. The loss drops LU to 22-14 on the season.

For one of the few times this season, the Cardinal offense was held in check scoring one run on eight hits with an error. Despite the setback, Big Red still managed to outhit the Bears, 8-7.

Junior Joe Buckendorff got the start Monday – his first of the season – and went 2.2 before being pulled for Jacob Ellis in the third. Buckendorff (1-2) allowed three earned runs on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

Baylor started Cam Caley who pitched 2.0 scoreless before giving way to the bullpen. Caley was one of six Bears to pitch on the night. Cole Stasio picked the victory for BU – his first of the season – after pitching 2.0 scoreless innings allowing just one hit.

Big Red had chances to break through in the second and fifth with the bases loaded but was unable to push a run across. LU had the bases loaded with two out in the second and Baylor managed to escape after inducing a flyout off the bat of Kevin Bermudez. LU loaded the bases again in the fifth, but the Bears were again able to escape harm after Reese Durand flied to left and Kyle Harper was cut down at the plate trying to tag up.

The Bears took an early one-run lead pushing across the first score in their half of the first. The deficit remained at one heading into the third, and the Cardinals were a strike away from keeping it there when BU's Kyle Nevin took a 3-2 pitch over the left field wall. The Bears managed to add another run before the Cardinals ended the frame.

LU broke through with a run in the sixth inning with three consecutive two-out hits. Josh Blankenship got things started with a single through the right side and he came around to score on Harper's shot down the right field line. Unfortunately, the Bears answered back with one in their half of the sixth and one more in the eighth.

The Cardinals return to the friendly confines of the Vincent-Beck Stadium Wednesday when they host Houston Baptist. The game against the Huskies is slated to begin at 6 p.m. and will be televised on the WAC Digital Network.
