BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team (10-10/1-3 WAC) returns to the court Saturday for their 2022 regular-season finale. Big Red enters the match against UT Grande Valley looking to secure it's spot in the Western Athletic Conference Championship tournament.
The Cardinals enter the week having won three of the previous five outings but had their last scheduled match – at McNeese – canceled due to weather. LU is currently tied for fifth in the WAC's Southwest Division just a game back of Sam Houston and UTRGV. A victory Saturday would move the Cardinals into a three-way tie for third in the division.
The Vaqueros are 10-9 (.526) on the season and enter the week with a 2-2 (.500) conference record. UTRGV heads into Saturday's match looking to put an end to a five-game slide that has seen the team from Edinburg play some very tough competition with all five matches on the road. That five-match stretch for the Vaqueros includes away matches against UTEP and Texas Tech.
The series between the two schools dates back to the 1993 season, but Saturday's contest will be the first time the two schools have met as conference rivals. LU leads the all-time series 18-6 (.750), a record that includes a 5-2 (.714) mark in Edinburg. The two schools have split the last four meetings with the Cardinals having won two straight and 11 of the last 13.
Saturday's match is slated to begin at 10 a.m. from the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center.
