BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University men's tennis team will put its win streak on the line Thursday when they return to action to host former conference rival, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. The match against the Islanders will take place Thursday at 1 p.m. from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
The Cardinals enter the week riding the wave of momentum from a seven-match win streak – a streak that has consisted of lopsided wins, and one-point decisions that came down to the final match. The only hiccup for the LU during that stretch came from Mother Nature as the Cardinals were forced to cancel a match with another set of Cardinals – UIW – due to weather in San Antonio.
The Islanders (10-7) enter the week having dropped four of their last five, but are coming off close losses at UT Arlington and Rice. The lone victory for A&M-Corpus Christi during that stretch was a one-point victory over DePaul.
The series between LU and the Islanders has been one that has been in favor of Corpus Christi, 26-4, but all the Cardinals wins in the series have come under current head coach
Scott Shankles. Big Red went through a stretch where they won four of six, but the Islanders have won each of the past three meetings.
The match against A&M-Corpus Christi will kick off a tough three-match slate over four days for the Red and White. The Cardinals will be in College Station, Texas, Friday to face a Texas A&M squad which is currently ranked just outside the nation's top 25. The Aggies have dropped five of the last seven matches but are coming off back-to-back wins. Among their five losses, four have come against top 25 programs, including two in the top 10. The Aggies will play UT Arlington and No. 13 Texas before hosting LU. The match against Texas A&M will begin at noon Friday, Mar. 11
th from the Mitchell Tennis Center.
The Cardinals will close out the tough three-match swing against UT-Arlington Sunday morning in Beaumont. UTA enters the week with an 8-5 (.615) overall record having won five of the last seven matches, but the two losses have come in the previous three outings (at UTSA and against Wichita State). Sunday's contest will begin at 11 a.m. Sunday from the Thompson Family Tennis Center.
