SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Lamar University got out to a strong start Thursday evening maintaining a lead throughout the opening set, but UIW rallied late to win the set and eventually the match, 3-1 (25-23, 25-21, 26-28, 25-20). The loss drops LU to 8-15 on the season and 2-10 in Southland Conference play.
The Cardinals finished the night with a .222 attack percentage after recording 47 kills on 126 attempts (with just 19 errors). The Cardinals' offense was led by
Kaitlyn Gil's 13 kills (on 34 attempts) while sophomore Paige Dugan added 11 kills and 35 swings. Junior
Tytiana Johnson finished the night with six kills and a team-high eight blocks.
UIW's Kyla Malone was the main scoring threat for the other Cardinals. UIW finished the night hitting 59-27-139 (.230), led by Malone's match-high 20 kills.
The Cardinals recorded a .483 attack percentage in the opening set (17-3-29) to go along with two aces, but after they dropped the set late UIW managed to hold the momentum through the second set.
The Cardinals responded in the third taking a two-point decision in extended play in a set that saw them trail by six late in the match and stave off match point to extend the match. Unfortunately, Big Red was unable to keep momentum on their side falling in four.
The Cardinals return to action Saturday when the travel to Houston, Texas to take on Houston Christian. The match against the Huskies will begin at 11 a.m. from Sharp Gym.
