BEAUMONT, Texas – After a successful four-game homestand to open the season Lamar University will put its four-game win streak on the line Wednesday when they open a six-game game stretch away from Beaumont. The Cardinals open the road swing with a solo game Wednesday at Tarleton State before traveling to Arlington, Texas for three games against the Mavericks.
Off to their best start since 2017, the Cardinals are 4-0 behind strong pitching and defense, and some timely hitting. The Cardinals opened the year by defeating Houston – who entered the game as the nation's top home run hitting squad – 2-0, and then followed that up with a sweep of a Stephen F. Austin squad (in non-conference action) who opened the year with a victory over nationally ranked Oklahoma.
The Cardinals have outscored their opponents, 14-4, through the first four games of the season. The Cardinals starting staff has surrendered just two earned runs in 19.1 innings, with the bullpen coming in and being just as tough. Junior
Jack Dallas has come on in the ninth of the three save situations to close things out.
LU travels to Stephenville, Texas to take on a Tarleton State club that already has 13 games under its belt. The Texans are 5-8 (.385) on the year and have dropped two of the last three games – with both losses coming against Southland foe Central Arkansas. LU will be the fourth Southland school Tarleton has faced already this season with the Texans posting a 2-6 (.250) record in those games
Wednesday's game is slated to begin at 2 p.m. from the Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex on the Tarleton campus.
Following the game against Tarleton, the Cardinals will continue to travel north for a four-game stretch against UT Arlington beginning Friday. The Mavericks (5-5) are looking to break away from a recent trend that has seen them split their last six decisions. The Mavs will take on Oklahoma Tuesday evening in Norman before returning home to host the Cardinals.
The series against the Mavericks will begin Friday evening with a 6:30 p.m. first pitch. The Saturday doubleheader will begin with the first game scheduled for 2 p.m. followed by a 6 p.m. first pitch in the nightcap. The two teams will close out the series Sunday with a 1 p.m. start. All four games will be played at the Clay Gould Ball Park.
