BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team (5-3, 2-1 Southland) will return to action at the Thompson Family Tennis Center when they open a three-match homestand beginning Tuesday and culminating with Senior Day Sunday afternoon.
The Cardinals will look to maintain their unbeaten run at home this season which has seen them record victories against Prairie View A&M, McNeese and most recently a 5-2 decision against Southeastern Louisiana last Sunday afternoon.
Cardinals vs. McNeese, Tuesday, Mar. 9 @ 2 PM:
Playing their second match against the Cowgirls this season, the Cardinals will look to secure another victory in the Battle of the Border. The Cowgirls enter Tuesdays match up with a 1-9 record, and 1-2 mark in conference play. The Cowgirls last match saw them drop a 7-0 decision against Texas A&M Corpus Christi last Sunday.
The Cardinals will take positives from the first match against the Cowgirls – just over a month ago – which saw them record a tightly contested one-point decision. The Cardinals and Cowgirls have a long history against each other, with the Cardinals currently riding a three-match win streak and maintaining a 19-13 record overall.
Cardinals vs. Sam Houston, Friday, Mar. 12 @ 1 PM:
Arguably one of the best teams in the Southland, the Bearkats travel to Beaumont with a 7-2 record and unbeaten in conference play (3-0). The Bearkats boast an impressive 31-9 record in singles play this season. Their number one seeded player, junior Sahaja Yamalapalli, remains unbeaten in singles play on the season having not dropped a set in her seven contested matches.
However, the Bearkats record in doubles play is less of a dominant reading with a 13-8 record (.619) on the season. The unbeaten Cardinal pairing of
Alba Perez and
Elena Rodriguez lead the for LU in doubles. The two programs have met 30 times in their history with the Cardinals commanding an impressive 22-8 record, the last match against the Bearkats saw Big Red cruise to a 5-2 decision at the friendly confines of the Thompson Family Tennis Center (2019).

SFA makes the journey to Beaumont with a 7-3 record on the season and a 2-1 mark in conference play. SFA's most recent match saw them serve up an impressive victory over UIW, 6-1. SFA hold a .590 winning percentage in singles play for the season having won 23 matches of the 39 contested. Across doubles play, SFA is slightly stronger and boasts a 14-7 record (.667). Sundays match up with SFA will be the 27th time the two programs have met, and the Cardinals will try to emulate their impressive record against SFA which sees them ride a three match win streak and boast an 18-8 overall record.
Following this week the Cardinals will hit the road for their final 6 matches off the season. Starting off with a non-conference contest against UL Lafayette on Mar. 17, with play due to start at 4:30 PM. The Cardinals will return to conference play when they travel to UIW on Mar. 26, with the match slated to begin at 1 p.m.
