LU Drops One-Point Decision at Abilene Christian

| By:
Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Lamar University dropped a heartbreaking one-point decision at Abilene Christian Sunday afternoon, 4-3. The loss drops Big Red to 7-5 on the season and 4-3 in Southland Conference play.

The match came down to the very first point of the match. The two teams split the six singles matches, but ACU managed to squeak out two wins on the doubles courts.

Despite dropping the doubles point, the Cardinals battled right back with victories from freshman Elena Rodriguez and junior Natalia Garcia Molina. Rodriguez got a 6-4, 6-2 decision over Maryjoe Crisologo at No. 2 singles. Garcia Molina gave LU the advantage with her straight-sets decision over Ileana Mocciola, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 4.

Unfortunately, the momentum didn't last long as the Wildcats battled back with victories on courts 6 and 5, respectively, to reclaim a one-point lead. Senior Bianca Vitale responded for the Cardinals when she defeated Nini Memishishi, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4. Vitale's victory placed the outcome of the entire match on No. 3 singles – a match that went to a third set, but unfortunately, ACU's Allison Stewart was able to battle back from an opening set loss to win the match for ACU in three sets.

The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to take on A&M-Corpus Christi. The match against the Islanders will begin at 11 a.m.
