ARLINGTON, Texas – A promising start turned to disappoint as Lamar University dropped an 11-3 decision at UT Arlington Saturday afternoon – the Cardinals first loss in the series and just their second of the season.
The Cardinals (6-2) recorded eight hits on the day, but managed just three runs, and only one of those coming after the first inning. LU was forced to go deep into its bullpen Saturday as junior
Max Mize got the start but was only able to pitch 1.2 before being pulled.
UTA's David Moffat pitched six innings, surrendering five hits, and just the two first inning runs to get the victory for the Mavericks.
The Cardinals took advantage of a walk and two first-inning errors to plate their first two runs. After
Anthony Quirion reach on and error, junior
Chase Kemp drove him home with a double to right field. Quirion came around to score after
Deric LaMontagne reached on an error charged to the Mavs' second basemen.
UTA answered by scoring four in the bottom half of the second after their first four batters reached. The Mavericks tacked on another run in the third and broke the game open in the fourth. The Mavs managed to push six runs across in the inning that saw the first seven batters reach.
After the fourth, Cardinals settled down and kept UTA off the board for the rest of the game but the damage was done. Big Red closed out the scoring by pushing one across in their half of the eighth. The run came from LaMontagne's second home run in the past three days.
The Cardinals return to Clay Gould Field looking to win the series. The game is slated to begin at 1 p.m. in Arlington.
