Anthony Quirion and
Chase Kemp hit back-to-back home runs in the top of the 3
rd, and sophomore
Dylan Johnson pitched six scoreless innings to lead Lamar University to a 4-0 victory at UT Arlington Sunday afternoon at Clay Gould Field.
The victory locked up LU's second series win of the season (sweep of Stephen F. Austin), and was the third shutout victory in its previous four games.
The Cardinals got another quality start from their staff as Johnson who pitched six scoreless, surrendering just three hits while striking out six – with two walks – to get the win. The Cardinals' bullpen combined for three innings of scoreless baseball without surrendering a hit as
Braxton Douthit pitches the final 1.1 innings for his first save of the season.
The Cardinals finished the day with 10 hits including three multi-hit efforts. Sophomore
Deric LaMontagne went 3-for-4 with a double, while Kemp and Quirion both went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI.
The Mavericks started Cade Winquest who went four innings surrendering seven hits and three runs, while striking out two, but takes the loss.
The Cardinals struck first in the top half of the first after
Avery George led off the game with a single and advanced to second on an error, he reached third on a fly to right off the bat of
Reese Durand. George came around to score on a sacrifice fly from
Kelby Weyler.
The 1-0 lead held until the top half of the third when Quirion and Kemp went back-to-back with two outs in the inning. The Cardinals then turned things over to Johnson who kept the Mavs off the scoreboard through six innings.
Big Red tacked on an insurance run in the eighth and the bullpen slammed the door shut for the final score.
The Cardinals return to action Tuesday when they travel to Baton Rouge, La., to take on Southern.
