Box Score BEAUMONT, Texas- The Lamar University women's tennis team (6-4, 3-2 Southland) came up an against an impressive pSam Houston team Friday afternoon but dropped a 6-1 decision.
The Cardinals dropped the early point in the doubles to the Bearkats (8-2, 4-0 SLC), coming closest in match 2 where the pairing of
Natalia Garcia Molina and
Elena Rodriguez but lost a 7-6 decision.
Lamar looked to bounce back in the singles matches; however, the Sam Houston team proved why they are a force to be reckoned with and remain unbeaten in conference play this season (4-0).
Bianca Vitale put up a resounding fight in the seed one match against the Bearcats Sahaja Yamalapalli, the Bearkats player is the number one ranked SLC singles player this season and closed out a 6-4, 6-3 decision against Vitale. On Court 2,
Elena Rodriguez dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision against Karla De La Luz Montalvo. A similar series of events unfolded on court 3, 4 and 5, with
Alba Perez, Molina and
Ana Jolic dropping their respective matches 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-2 and 7-5, 7-5. The Cardinals did etch a point on the scoreboard thanks to a win on court 6.
Elena Rubio marched to a convincing 6-3, 6-2 result over the Bearkats Petra Kaszas.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Monday, following the match being moved due to inclement weather. Big Red's final contest will serve as Senior Day for Big Red's
Natalia Garcia Molina, Dominique Leh and Bianca Vitale. The senior day ceremony will commence at 12:30 with play following after.
"This is the girls final home match at Lamar and I would love to see big crowds come out and show their appreciation and support," said head coach
David Wong. The Cardinals will face off against Stephen F Austin at 1 p.m. on Mar. 15.
