Big Red Drops Match to Warhawks

| By:
Box Score MONROE, La. – On an afternoon that saw three singles matches go to a third set, the Lamar University women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision at UL Monroe Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately, the Red and White managed to take only one of the three-set matches as they drop just their second match of the season.

The Warhawks took the doubles point and carried that momentum into the singles competition. After taking opening-set victories on five of the first six courts, the Cardinals began to fight their way back into the match. Trailing 2-0, the Cardinals got on the scoreboard when Elena Rodriguez recorded a 6-2, 6-4, decision over ULM's Drousile Dzeubou, 6-2, 6-4.

To make things more interesting, the Cardinals battled back on courts 1, 3 and 4 to force a third set.

The Warhawks pushed their lead to 3-1 with a straight-sets victory at No. 5 singles. With the setback on court 5, Big Red needed to win the remaining three courts to take the overall match. Unfortunately for the Red and White, ULM hung on for wins at Nos. 4 and 3, respectively for the overall team win before Vitale closed out the scoring with a 3-6, 7-5, 7-5, decision over the Warhawks' Hala Badwy.

The Cardinals return to action Saturday when they travel to Tulsa, Okla., to take on Oral Roberts. The match against the Golden Eagles will begin at 1 p.m.
