BEAUMONT, Texas - Over the past few weeks, Lamar University's women's soccer team has received weekly honors by the Western Athletic Conference and trend continues this week as the
Meg Sheppard has been named WAC Defensive Player of the Week.
A native of Nederland, Texas, Sheppard was instrumental in leading LU's defense to a pair of shutout wins. Against Chicago State, the Cardinals would hold the Cougars to just two shots all game long while scoring twice to win 2-0. Then, Sheppard would play a role on both offense and defense against Abilene Christian as she scored the overtime winner in a 1-0 triumph. These two wins clinched the second seed in the Southwest Division for the Cardinals.
Sheppard joins
Christine Kitaru and
Nicole Panis as WAC weekly awards winners for the Cardinals. Her goal against ACU was the second of her season and she also has two assists. An anchor on the defense, she has guided LU to seven shutouts including the last three in a row.
LU will prepare to seek the WAC Conference title this week as they will head out Abilene for the upcoming conference tournament. Round one starts Wednesday at 4 PM as Big Red will meet New Mexico State.
