WSOC Ring Ceremony 2019 Team

Women's Soccer Recognizes 2019 SLC Champions

| By:
BEAUMONT, Texas – Nearly nine months after Lamar capped off the greatest season in program history with a Southland Conference championship – its second in the past three years – the players and coaches from the history-making team received their coveted rings Wednesday morning.

Due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic, the ceremony was held following a practice session instead of the traditional pregame ceremony as head coach Steve Holeman and the 2019 squad were distributed their rings which are punctuated by the most decorated team in program history.

"It was nice to officially recognize our team for their achievements from last year," said head coach Steve Holeman. "The girls have been patiently waiting to get their rings and were very excited to receive them. With that said, the 2019 championships are behind us, and we are looking forward to the next spring and the opportunity to play for another title."

The Cardinals won their second title by posting a 16-7 (.696) overall record and a near perfect 10-1 (.909) mark in conference play. Big Red rattled off a 12-game win streak heading into the NCAA Championships. LU posted five shutouts and surrendered just one goal in six other games. The Cards closed out the season by facing UCLA in the NCAA Championships.

Forward Lucy Ashworth earned the SLC Player of the Year honors, as well as taking home Forward of the Year honors. The First Team All-Southland honoree broke numerous program career records including points (93), shots attempted (241), shots on goals (134) and she sits three goals from tying the program career record of 34 goals.

Forward Esther Okoronkwo earned First Team All-Southland honors and was named the 2019 SLC Newcomer of the Year. The Richmond, Texas native moved up in the record books in career categories as she sits in third in points (60), third in goals (25), second in game-winning goals (8) and tied for eighth with 10 assists. Ashworth and Okoronkwo were two of seven Cardinals who were named to the all-conference squad last season.
