Tennis Takes Battle of the Border

Box Score LAKE CHARLES, La. – Less than 24 hours after men's and women's basketball squared off against rival McNeese, it was women's tennis' turn for the Battle of the Border. Lamar University seized on the opportunity and picked up a 6-1 victory over McNeese Sunday morning in Lake Charles.

The lopsided victory moved the Cardinals to 8-4 (.667) on the season and more importantly 2-2 in Southland Conference play.

The Cardinals quickly turned the doubles point into a 2-0 lead and never allowed their rivals an opportunity to get back in the match. Senior Jasmin Buchta had the Red and White on the verge of the overall team victory with her straight-sets win over McNeese's Marija Mastilovic. Buchta's decision gave the Cardinals a 3-0 lead with four matches remaining.

The Cardinals were in the drivers seat with a commanding lead and open-set wins on three of the remaining four courts. On court four, junior Natalia Garcia Molina battled back for a victory in the second to four a third.

Sophomore Laura Sola Grau took all the drama out of the match taking the deciding victory on court five. She defeated the Cowgirls' Hanna Blinouskaya, 6-1, 6-3. Big Red would add singles wins from seniors' Sanja Jolic and Bianca Vitale (courts 3 and 2, respectively) to get to 6. McNeese scored its only point on court four to close out the day.

The Cardinals will continue their three-match conference road swing Saturday when they travel to Corpus Christi, Texas to take on the Islanders. The match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will begin at 11 a.m. from the Henry Tennis Center.
