Box Score 2 FRESNO, Calif. – Lamar University dropped its first two matches of the Pacific Central Valley Championships (PCVC) in Fresno, Calif. Saturday evening. Big Red opened the tournament against host Fresno State but dropped a 4-0 decision, and then came back in the afternoon to face Nevada falling by the final score of 4-1.
The losses drop LU to 4-10 (.286) on the season.
The PCVC is different from most spring team matches in that all opening-round matches started with singles competition, but the team's switched to the traditional doubles start in the second round.
Fresno got out to an early 2-0 lead after singles wins on courts two and three and never looked back. The Bulldogs closed out the match with wins from the lower parts of their order.
The Cardinals returned to the court at 6 p.m. to take on Nevada. After the Wolf Pack took the doubles point, Big Red was the first ones out of the gates in singles play. Junior
Nicolas Mayr raced out to a 6-2 decision in the opening set over the Wolf Pack's Delmas N'Tcha. Mayr never took his foot off the gas posting an identical score to win the match in straight sets.
The momentum was short lived as Nevada took the next three decisions on courts 4 – 6. The unfortunate part of the day came in the first set on court No. 6. Sophomore
Joshua Taylor was edged in the tiebreaker 7-4 and was unable to rally. The setback proved pivotal as the Cardinals had forced third sets on courts 1 – 2.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday morning to face the University of the Pacific. The match against the Tigers will take place at 9 a.m. (11 a.m. Beaumont time) from the Fresno State Tennis Courts.
