BEAUMONT, Texas – Fresh off a heartbreaking loss at UT Rio Grande Valley, the Lamar University men's tennis team (4-8) will look got get back in the win column as they open the Pacific Central Valley Championship (PCVC) tournament against host Fresno State. The Cardinals are scheduled to take the court at approximately 11 a.m. (20 minutes following the conclusion of the first match which begins at 9 a.m.).
The PCVC is an eight-team tournament hosted by Fresno State. The rest of the field includes tournament host FSU, Wichita State, Pacific, Hawaii, San Francisco, Nevada and Gonzaga. The Cardinals are the furthest east team invited to play in the tournament. The tournament will consist of a winner's and loser's bracket. Unlike traditional spring matches, the PCVC will start with singles competition and then transition to doubles.
The Cardinals opening-round opponent, Fresno State, enters their home tournament with a 4-5 (.444) overall record. The Bulldogs have struggled recently dropping three of their past four matches entering the weekend but the one win was a big one knocking off No. 44-ranked Auburn, 4-2.
Should the Cardinals win their opening-round match they will return to action at 4 p.m. on the courts at Fresno, but if they drop their first match they will play at 4 p.m. from the Copper River Country Club. The Cardinals will face either Nevada or Gonzaga in the second match of the tournament. Gonzaga enters the weekend with an 8-2 (.800) overall record and has won six-straight. The Wolf Pack heads to Fresno sporting a 6-4 (.600) record but has fallen on hard times recently dropping four of its past five games – the lone win during that stretch coming at Sacramento State.
The tournament will conclude Sunday morning with the championship round of matches beginning at 9 a.m.
