BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball program fell on Wednesday in a Southland contest with Sam Houston State, 75-68, in the Montagne Center.
The Bearkats controlled the first quarter from the beginning as they limited Lamar's shot percentage to just 23 percent in the first. Redshirt senior
Amber Vidal found herself in a groove early and often has the San Antonio, Texas native, went 2-for-4 in the first with four points.
The second quarter saw a lot of back and forth within the frame. The Cardinals controlled the quarter going into the break 16-15 as freshman
Malay McQueen, who was one of four Cards to finish scoring in double figures, finished with nine second quarter points on 3-for-3 shooting while going 2-for-2 at the line. McQueen helped cut the Bearkat lead into six going into halftime.
Vidal got back into her groove in the third quarter as she tallied eight points in the quarter. She finished the third going 4-for-7 from the field. Bench play was dominated by the Cardinals in the third. Lamar tacked on eight points off the bench compared to just three for Sam Houston State.
Sophomore
Angel Hastings tacked on 15 second-half points that included a huge two-pointer with less than a minute left to push into the Bearkat lead.
The Cardinals had four players finish in double-digit scoring. This marks the first time since Nov. 11, 2019 that the Cards achieved the feat. Junior
Jadyn Pimentel tallied 10 points in the loss but tacked on seven steals and five assists to her performance.
