Spirited Display by Cardinals Not Enough

BEAUMONT, Texas- A spirited performance was not enough for the Lamar University women's basketball team as they fell to Texas A&M - Corpus Christi on Saturday afternoon, 64-56, at the Montagne Center.

A cagey first quarter saw both teams struggle to capitalize on possession; the Cardinals and Islanders ended the first quarter poised on eight points apiece.

The second quarter saw the Islanders forge ahead and take a five-point lead at the halftime mark. The Cardinals managed a fifty percent field goal percentage, recording five out of a possible 10 attempts. Angel Hastings etched nine points for the Cardinals to ensure they remained in touching distance of the Islanders.

The third quarter saw both teams vying for control of the match and a fast-flowing quarter by both teams saw the Cardinals record 15 points, bettered by the Islanders 16 points in the 3rd quarter.

A resilient display in the fourth quarter saw the rejuvenated Cardinals pull it back point by point, trailing at a time by 10 points. The Cardinals rallied to lead 51-50 at 5:34 left to play. The Cardinals fightback was thanks in part to duo, Hastings and Amber Vidal who both broke into double figures during the second half of the match. However, the Islanders weathered Big Reds storm on the game to retake the lead and control the last few minutes of the match up. Vidal closed out the match with 17 points and Hastings recorded 15 points for the Cardinals.

The Cardinals will return to action when they travel to San Antonio to face off against UIW. The game is due to tip off at 6:30 P.M on Wednesday evening.
