FRISCO, Texas - As announced by the league office on Tuesday, Lamar University's
Kelby Weyler has been named the Southland Conference Hitter of the Week.
Weyler was instrumental in Lamar's series win over Rhode Island, going 7-for-11 with a double and a triple. The redshirt sophomore from Village Mills, Texas, had at least two hits in every game, and he drove in four RBIs and scored one run as well. Defensively he was phenomenal, fielding at 1.000% in 12 chances. He had 7 putouts and five assists and was part of two double plays.
Weyler and
JC Correa are tied for the team lead and tied for third in the SLC for total hits so far in 2020 with seven apiece. The Cardinal duo are part of a LU offense that ranks fourth in the SLC in batting average, fourth in total hits, fourth in total runs scored, and fourth in scoring average.
The Cardinals have been on fire defensively with the addition of Weyler and the shifting of Correa to second. Those two, along with first baseman
Chase Kemp and third baseman
Anthony Quirion, combined for no errors in the first three games of 2020. Only 12 other teams in the NCAA had no errors during Opening Weekend.
Southland weekly award winners are nominated and voted upon by each school's sports information director. Voting for one's own athlete is not permitted.
Big Red faces #22 Texas on Wednesday with first pitch set for 4 p.m.
