Cards Drop Nail Biter to Nicholls

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's basketball program's late comeback not enough as they fall to Nicholls on Wednesday night at the Montagne Center, 62-60.

The Colonels jumped out to a 23-11 first quarter score behind nine points from Tykeria Williams who finished the first quarter shooting 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. The Cardinals did not go down without a fight in the first half as sophomore Angel Hastings went 2-for-6 from the field during the first two quarters while finishing the first half with two steals and drawing nine fouls.

The third quarter went on to be all Cardinal offense as Lamar went on to shoot an impressive 57 percent from the field in the third. Hastings backed the Cardinal offense with 10 third quarter points. Senior Briana Laidler added five rebounds in the third and totaled 11 on the night.

The fourth quarter saw a near comeback as Hastings hit a three-pointer with 24 seconds left to put the Cardinals ahead by two. The Colonels had a 17-point advantage before the near comeback accord. Airi Hamilton for Nicholls hit the go-ahead layup for the win with seven seconds left to give the Colonels the 62-60 win over the Cardinals.

Junior Jadyn Pimentel was one of two Cardinals to score in double figures tonight with 11 points. Hastings was the other member with 23 points. Pimentel added five rebounds, five assists and one steal to her performance in the loss.

From Coach Aqua Franklin:

Overall Statement:

"We turned it over two times down the stretch and they go score layup. We put ourselves in a hole, and we cannot do that. We came out flat, but we came out good for the first like three possessions and then after that they outscored us in the first half 39-24 and we outscored them in the second half, 36-23. We put two quarters together, and against ACU we only put one. We're getting closer to putting four together. We're going to continue to work at it. I am proud of Angel. Getting back in a certain lineup, she went 5-of-10 with 23 points. We got to give it up to Nicholls. They did a really good job of scoring the basketball in the paint. They were efficient with their shots. So we got to capitalize on that, and make sure that their stops and get ready for Houston Baptist."

Up Next: The Cardinals will look to get back in the win column as they travel west on I-10 to Houston to square off against the Houston Baptist Huskies on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. (CT).
