Cardinals Fall to Bobcats in San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Texas – Despite a 16-point performance from senior Jadyn Pimentel, the Cardinals fell to the Texas State Bobcats on Saturday evening in San Marcos by a score of 69-53.

Texas State got things rolling out of the opening whistle and was quickly answered by junior Anyssia Gibbs to even things up within the first three minutes. Gibbs went onto help the Cards with four first-quarter points that helped keep the Cardinals in the contest. Senior Jadyn Pimentel got in the scoring column before the media break of the first that would bring Lamar to within three. The Pimentel basket at the 4:24 mark of the first was the last basket for either team going into the second. The Bobcats slightly outshot the Cards by a percentage of 33.3 to 26.7 percent.

Lamar took their first lead of the game at the 8:51 mark of the second on a jumper by redshirt junior Micaela Wilson to put the Cards up 10-9. The Bobcats answered right back on a pair of free-throws by Kennedy Taylor. A layup by senior Umaja Collins put the Cards back up, 12-11, right before the second media timeout. Texas State's Da'nasia Hood got the Bobcats back on the board with a three-pointer.  The Bobcats went on to use a 10-0 run over the three minutes to push their lead to 21-12 over the Cards. Costly turnovers for Texas State let Lamar pull to within two, 22-20, before a floater by sophomore Malay McQueen knotted the score at 22-22 going into halftime.  

The Bobcats came out of the break on fire using a 7-0 run to create some breathing room between the program before a layup by freshman Bebe Galloway ended the Texas State run. From the seven-minute mark of the third, the quarter became a back and forth contest before the Bobcats took off in the minutes following the third quarter media timeout. Collins led the Cardinals in the third with three points as the Cards shot just 33.3 percent compared to 61.5 percent shooting by the Bobcats.

The fourth quarter saw the Cardinals try to claw their way back into the contest has Texas State opened the fourth with a lead of 48-34. Lamar went to a full-court press in the fourth to help combat the Bobcat offense. Wilson, McQueen and Pimentel helped the Cards cut the lead to 11 at the fourth quarter media. Texas State extended their lead over Lamar with free throws by Lauryn Thompson and Kennedy Taylor. The Bobcats went on to extend their lead over the Cards as they captured the win by a score of 69-53.

Pimentel led Cardinal scorers with 16 points on the evening. She added three rebounds, two assists and two steals to her line. McQueen and Collins both finished the evening with eight points and total a combined seven rebounds.

UP NEXT: The Cardinals will take a holiday break before heading to Austin, Texas to face the Texas Longhorns in their final non-conference contest of the season on Tuesday, December 29th with tip off scheduled for 1:00 p.m. CT.
