Cardinals Fall at No. 19 Texas, 77-49

AUSTIN, Texas – The Cardinals went on the road to finish out their non-conference portion of their schedule, but fell to the No. 19 Texas Longhorns by a score of 77-49 at the Frank Erwin Center.

The Cardinals fell early in the first going into the media timeout down, 14-5, against the Longhorns. Junior Angel Hastings got the first Cardinal points of the contest at the 7:48 mark of the first to pull LU to within three. Charli Collier was relied upon by Texas in the first after putting up 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting with two rebounds. Lamar shot 45 percent in the first compared to the Longhorns, who shot a staggering 56 percent.

Lamar saw their offense come out firing in the second quarter as they dug into the Longhorn lead and cut it to within seven on a jumper by freshman Sabria Dean at the 8:17 of the second quarter. Despite the Cardinals cutting the lead, the mighty Texas defense appeared and held Lamar to a scoring drought over two minutes long from the 7:18 mark to the 4:49 mark of the second quarter. Senior Jadyn Pimentel ended the Cardinal drought at the 4:22 mark when she made a pull-up jumper that made the score 32-20 in favor of Texas. Dean used a nine-point second quarter showing to help the Cardinals cut the Longhorn lead to 40-25 going into the half.

The third quarter was a very defensive quarter by both programs. Going into the third quarter media timeout, both teams only put up a combined 13 points with Texas grabbing seven of them and the Cardinals nabbing six points. Lamar's final basket of the quarter came at the 6:05 mark on a driving layup by sophomore Malay McQueen. After the Cardinal basket, the Longhorns' defense locked down and the Texas offense pushed their lead to 62-31 going into the final frame.

The Cardinals tried to cut the lead in the fourth as Dean tacked on to her points adding four fourth-quarter points. The Longhorns had an answer for each Lamar basket in the fourth. The Cards shot 41 percent for the contest while Texas knocked down 53 percent of their shots as the Longhorns took the victory over the Cardinals, 77-49, from Austin.

Freshman Sabria Dean tallied a season-high 16 points on 6-for-8 from the field and added on two rebounds and an assist to her stat line. Senior Jadyn Pimentel was the other Cardinal to score in double figures with 10 points on the evening.

UP NEXT: The Cardinals will open conference play on Saturday, January 2 when they travel to Abilene Christian with tip off slated for 1:00 p.m. CT.
