BEAUMONT, Texas – When the Lamar University Cardinals step on the court Wednesday to take on Nicholls in a Southland Conference showdown, the Cardinals will be looking to continue a recent trend. Over the course of the past six games, the Cardinals have rotated wins and losses and enter the week 8-7 (.533) overall but tied for sixth in the conference standings with a 2-2 mark. The Cardinals are looking to bounce back from Saturday's disappointing 12-point loss to Abilene Christian in Beaumont – the team's first loss at home this season.
Prior to the loss against ACU, the Cardinals were coming off a high with their victory at preseason Southland Conference favorite, New Orleans. The Cardinals rolled into the Crescent City and picked up a seven-point victory over the Privateers which was just the eighth all-time win over UNO and just the third ever in New Orleans. Unfortunately, the Cardinals were unable to carry that momentum all the way through the game against the Wildcats. Playing their second game in less than 48 hours, the Cardinals struggled in the final minutes against the Wildcats being outscored 20-8 in the game's final eight minutes.
For LU, it was their second game in less than 48 hours, but the Wildcats were coming off five days rest.
Big Red's next opponent, Nicholls comes to Beaumont after an impressive non-conference season. The Colonels (9-6/3-1 SLC) put together one of the best stretches in non-conference play after picking up a five-point victory at Pittsburgh. That win came on the heels of an overtime loss at Illinois. Nicholls also hung tough against LSU falling by only 10 points in Baton Rouge.
The Colonels enter the week in a three-way tie for third in the conference standings with a 3-1 mark just a half game back of Abilene Christian and a game back of Stephen F. Austin. Nicholls is also just a game up on the LU two weeks into the conference chase.
The Colonels head to the Golden Triangle with momentum on their side winning three of the past four including consecutive wins over UIW and Sam Houston State. Nicholls has struggled to a 2-5 (.286) record away from Thibodaux this season, but their two wins have come at Pittsburgh and Sam Houston State.
The all-time series is one that has favored the Red and White, 27-11 (.711). That mark includes a current stretch that has seen LU win five of the past six meetings. The numbers are even stronger for the Cardinals in Beaumont. The Cardinals are 17-4 (.810) all-time in those games. Unfortunately, one of those losses came the last time the two played in the Montagne Center (2017-18). The Cardinals are coming off a 90-69 win over Nicholls last season in Thibodaux.
Wednesday's game is slated to tip off at 7 p.m. from the Montagne Center will and will be broadcast live on Newstalk 560 KLVI. The game will also be streamed live on ESPN3.
