Outfielders
The Lamar University softball program outfielders will be led this season by a strong senior contingent, as a well as several youthful talents to further strengthen the outfield pedigree.
Â
"Outfield has been breaking it down and finding ways to steal outs," said head coach
Amy Hooks. "They have set some huge goals for the upcoming season and I am ready to see them put it all together."
Â
The Cardinals will look to draw on the experience and expertise of three senior outfielders and maybe none more than
Shannon Klaus. Klaus had a standout performance for the Cardinals last season, setting the LU single season record with 25 stolen bases. She appeared in and started every single contest for LU and earned a second team All-SLC Outfielder.
Â
Mackenzie Futrell will play her fourth season for the Cardinals; in the 2019 season, Futrell played 28 games and scored seven runs.
Elizabeth Castillo will also return for the Cardinals, Castillo appeared in 49 games in the 2019 season, making 44 starts and hitting a 0.120 on the season.
Â
Lamar expects to see a boost to the outfield this season with the addition of freshman,
Olivia Taylor, born out of College Station, Texas. Taylor was a four-time All-Academic player at A&M Consolidated and was a member of the varsity squad all four years. She earned All-District honors during her four years and picked up the District 17-5a Defensive Player of the Year honor.
Â
The Cardinals will also see the return of two sophomores, Shania Amir and
Savana Mata to the outfield. Amir was an integral part of the Cardinals team in the 2019 season, earning an honorable mention for an All-SLC Catcher. Amir appeared in 54 games for the Lady Cardinals, making 50 starts. She also drove in 15 runs, the third most on the team. Mata made 32 starts for the Cardinals last year and will further strengthen the outfield options this coming season.
