Ashworth Scores in Cardinals Loss to Tulsa

TULSA, Okla. – Lucy Ashworth scored the lone goal for the Lamar University women's soccer team in a 3-1 loss to Tulsa on Sunday afternoon. The goal for Ashworth is her third goal of the season.

"I thought we played well for 70 minutes," remarked head coach Steve Holeman. "Unfortunately, the heat and lack of depth took its toll on us and Tulsa capitalized. With nine shots on goal to their six, we should have come away with a better result. Once we get back to full strength, I feel confident we will be ready for conference play. We chose to play one of the toughest non-conference schedules in our league so hopefully, it pays dividends here in a few weeks."

The loss for LU is it's fourth straight. Lamar outshot Tulsa in the contest 16-13 and outshot the Golden Hurricane 9-6 on shots on goal. Ashworth led the way with eight shots, including four being on goal for LU.

After not recording a shot on Thursday, the Cards came out and got the first three shots of the match. However, all three shots were wide of goal. Tulsa had the first shot on goal in the contest when Alyssa Kaiser had a shot on goal that Sandra Nygard saved.

The first shot on goal for LU came 11 minutes into the contest. Lucy Ashworth had a shot to the bottom left corner of the goal that Jazmiera Ditter saved keeping the game scoreless. Following Ashworth's shot on goal both, teams traded shot attempts, but each went wide or high.

Eleven minutes before halftime, the Golden Hurricane broke the scoreless tie. Alijah Oliver scored for Tulsa putting them ahead, 1-0. Less than eight minutes after the first goal, Oliver found Kayla Fernandez for the second goal of the contest putting Tulsa ahead 2-0 heading to halftime.

Opening the second half of the match, the Cards had the first three shots, all on goal. Chamelle Wiltshire fired a shot to the bottom left side that was saved. Less than three minutes later, Ashworth had a shot that was also saved. Three minutes after Ashworth's shot Anna Loftus fired a shot on goal but again Ditter made the save.

Lamar kept the pressure on the Golden Hurricane defense as Paloma Martinez put two shots on goal that were saved. However, after the Cards scoring chances by Martinez, Tulsa turned the field and scored its third goal of the game as Reagan Whitlow scored on a free-kick putting the Golden Hurricane ahead 3-0.

Following the goal for Tulsa, the Cards had a corner-kick opportunity that led to a shot by Meg Sheppard that was saved by Ditter, which kept the Cards off the scoreboard.

Late in the second half, Wasila Diwura picked up an assist as she found Ashworth, who beat Ditter for a Cardinals goal. LU could not get another goal and would drop the contest to the Golden Hurricane, 3-1.

The Cards return to action on Friday, Sept. 13 when they return to the LU Soccer Complex to host Texas Southern. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
