Cards Dominate Texas Southern in 5-0 Victory

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's soccer team snapped a four-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over Texas Southern on Friday night at the LU Soccer Complex. LU had five different players score a goal in the contest.

LU (2-5) outshot the Lady Tigers (1-6) 40-1 in the contest. Twenty-two of LU's shots were on goal. Lucy Ashworth led the Cardinals with 12 shots, seven on goal. Anna Loftus picked up two assists in the match.

"This game came at a perfect time. We have had a tough non-conference schedule," remarked head coach Steve Holeman. "We will enjoy the win and it is nice to get back into the win column. We created a lot of scoring chances in the first half, but we didn't capitalize."

The Cardinals came out looking to score early as Juana Plata fired a shot wide of goal in the first minute of the game. Following her shot, neither team had a shot attempt for the next nine minutes until Anna Loftus fired a shot wide.

LU continued to attack offensively as Loftus had a shot on goal that was saved by the goalkeeper for Texas Southern. Big Red's Esther Okoronkwo and Lucy Ashworth had shots on goal in the first 20 minutes of the contest that were saved.

With 25:10 on the clock, Loftus dropped a pass back to Sophia Manibo who fired a shot that beat the Lady Tigers goalie to the upper left-hand corner putting LU ahead 1-0. Lamar continued to put shots on the board but could not get another goal and took a 1-0 lead into halftime. LU outshot the Lady Tigers 19-1 in the first half of the contest.

LU continued to get plenty of scoring chances in the second half. Fifteen minutes into the half, Lucy Ashworth took a free kick and scored putting LU ahead 2-0. A little over 10 minutes later, Anessa Byerman sent a cross across the box and found Paloma Martinez for a goal extending the Cards lead to 3-0.

Lamar dominated the second half as they did not allow the Lady Tigers to record a shot. The Cards grew the lead to 4-0 after Loftus took a free-kick and found Okoronkwo who found the back of the net. LU added one more goal in the game when Jocelyn Hanrath found Hailey Loupe at the top of the box and Loupe fired a shot past the Lady Tigers goalie.

With the 5-0 victory, LU now improves to 7-0 in games against Texas Southern.

Lamar returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 15 when they host Oral Roberts at the LU Soccer Complex. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
