Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Travis Rae, Assistant Director of Media Relations

Cards Fall to Alabama, 5-0

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's soccer team closed out its four-game homestand on Sunday when they hosted the Crimson Tide of Alabama. The Cards were defeated 5-0 in the match at the LU Soccer Complex.
 
"Alabama is one of the top teams we will play this year and we knew they were very good in possession," remarked head coach Steve Holeman. We pressed them early in the second and had some scoring chances."
 
The Cards were outshot in the contest by Alabama, 34-7. Lucy Ashworth led the way for the Cards in shots with five.
 
The Crimson Tide controlled play early in the contest. With five minutes off the clock, Carly Wyatt took a shot that Jocelyn Hanrath saved, however, Gabby Duca got the rebound and scored the first goal of the game. Less than two minutes later, Duca found Casey Wertz for a goal extending the lead to 2-0.
 
Following the two goals, the Cards got its first two shots of the game, both by Ashworth. Ashworth's first shot went high of goal and her second shot was saved by Alex Palvin.
 
Alabama grew its lead to 3-0 15 minutes into the contest when Kat Rogers scored. Trailing 3-0, LU had three shots as Ashworth had another shot go wide of goal, Juana Plata had a shot blocked and Meg Sheppard missed a shot wide. After the first 45 minutes of play, the Cards trailed Alabama, 3-0.
 
Opening the second half of the contest, LU came out and had two shots in the first three minutes of the half. Ashworth took both shots and one-shot went wide right the next shot went wide left.
 
The Crimson Tide grew the lead to 4-0 after the Cards were called for a foul in the box. Carlee Giammona took the penalty kick and scored. Alabama grew the lead to 5-0 when Wertz found Riley Mattingly in the box and she turned and took a shot and scored. Lamar would fall 5-0 to Alabama.  
 
LU returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 5 when they travel to Fayetteville, Ark. to face Arkansas. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. This will be the Cards first road game of the season.
