Cards Host HBU in Midweek Action

BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University softball team plays its first midweek contest at the LU Softball Complex on Tuesday, April 23 when they host Houston Baptist in a non-conference contest. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. from the LU Softball Complex.

Houston Baptist enters the non-conference game with Lamar coming off an 2-0 victory to UIW on April 19. The Huskies have won four straight and its last loss came on April 13 when Nicholls defeated the Huskies, 8-1.

At the plate, the Huskies are led by Heidi Jaquez, who leads the team with a .292 batting average. Alexis Perry is second on the team hitting .288. Caitlyn Brockway leads the Huskies with 11 home runs and 23 RBIs on the season.

In the circle, Emma Guindon leads the team with 112.1 innings pitched. Opponents are hitting .232 off her. She leads the team with nine wins and has an ERA of 2.74. Besides Guindon, the Huskies have Elliot Estes and Jessica Patak who have seen action this season. Estes has pitched in 66 innings and has an ERA of 2.65 while Patak has an ERA of 4.38 in 78.1 innings pitched. Each have a win this season.

As a team, the Huskies are hitting .258 with 25 home runs and 45 doubles. They have an on-base percentage of .322 and are 8-for-11 in stolen bases. In the circle, Houston Baptist has a team ERA of 3.22. Opponents are hitting .259 against the Huskies with 59 extra base hits.
 
LAST TIME OUT: NORTHWESTERN STATE (April 19-20)
The Cards squared off with Northwestern State this past weekend in SLC action. Lamar came away with a 2-1 series win over the visiting Lady Demons. In game one, LU scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning taking a 4-0 lead. LU's lead remained at 4-0 until the top of the sixth inning, when NSU scored four unearned runs. Took game one, 4-3.
 
In game two, Big Red took an early 1-0 lead on a Victoria Garivey RBI double. LU grew the lead to 2-0 in the sixth inning when Taylor Davis had an RBI single up the middle. The Lady Demons answered right back in the top of the seventh inning, when they scored six runs taking a 6-2 lead. Lamar did not go down without a fight as they scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh but could not tie the game and were defeated 6-5.
 
In the rubber match between the two schools, Lamar scored thee runs in the third inning, on a Shaina Amir single and two when Kimberly Mattox reached on a fielder's choice. In the next inning, LU grew the lead to 5-0 when Garivey had an RBI single and Mackenzie Futrell scored on a wild pitch. Aaliyah Ruiz dominated in the circle for LU as she pitched a complete game three hitter for the Red and White. LU came away with a 5-0 victory.

What's Next
Following the non-conference contest against Houston Baptist, Lamar returns to action on Friday and Saturday when they host Nicholls in a three-game SLC series. Friday features a single game at 5 p.m. with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. All games will be played at the LU Softball Complex.
