BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team will close out their current three-match road swing Sunday with a match at UT Rio Grande Valley. The Cardinals (1-6) will look to get back in the win column after dropping their past two matches.
The Cardinals have opened the 2019 campaign with a tough non-conference schedule which included road matches against Rice, Houston, North Texas, TCU and Texas A&M, a neutral-sited contest against UNLV in College Station and a home match against UTSA.
The Cardinals picked up their lone victory of the season against UTSA to close out the opening month of the season. The Red and White rallied for a hard fought 4-3 victory over UTSA after being down early. The match against the Roadrunners was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader and the Cardinals had a 2-0 lead early in the second match before it was canceled due to rain.
The Vaqueros have also had a rocky start to the 2019 campaign. UTRGV is 0-3 to start the year with two losses against Southland Conference foes. The Vaqueros dropped 6-1 decision to Sam Houston State to open the year and followed that up with back-to-back 5-2 losses at Baylor and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Sunday's match will serve as the home opener for the Vaqueros.
The match against UT Rio Grande Valley was originally scheduled for a Saturday start but had to be pushed back a day due to expected rain in area. The match will begin Sunday at 11 a.m. from the Orville I. Cox Tennis Center in Edinburg.
Both squads will be headed out of town following the match. For UT Rio Grande Valley, Sunday's match will be the only home contest for the rest of the month, while the Red and White will return home for seven of their next nine.
