FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Lamar University softball team prepares to open the FGCU Invitational on Friday, but first they took on the national team from Japan. The Cards came out on the short end, as they were defeated 14-0.
 
"This was an amazing opportunity to play a very good National Team," remarked head coach Amy Hooks. "We were able to get everyone in the game and had a couple of well hit balls. I hope this is something these players will remember for the rest of their lives."
 
The Cardinals collected five hits in the contest against the Japanese national team. However, Lamar could not get a runner across the plate as they left four runners on base in the contest.
 
In the third inning, Lauryn McMahon drew a walk that put the first runner on base for the Cardinals. Picking up hits for the Cards in the contest was Mackenzie Futrell, Jade Lewis, Shannon Klaus, Taylor Murphy and Shaina Amir.
 
The Japan offense scored two runs in the first, second, third innings to break the game open. Nana kept the Cards bats quiet for the contest.
 
The Cards open play at the FGCU Invitational on Friday, Feb. 15 against Florida International. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. CT.
