Giffen Receives National Recognition

FRISCO, Texas – Lamar University junior kicker Bailey Giffen has been named STATS FCS National Special Teams Player of the Week, to go along with the Southland Conference Special Teams Player of the Week. Giffen is the second Cardinal to receive an SLC superlative this season, but the first to receive national recognition.
 
"I can't say enough about Bailey Giffen," said LU head coach Mike Schultz during his press conference Monday. "He has done an extraordinary job. He has a very strong leg. The thing that is so nice is you have confidence in the guy. He's a tremendous kid and he's been a tremendous asset for our football team. We're very excited to have him for another year."
 
Giffen scored 14 points for the Cardinals Saturday at Houston Baptist after going 4-for-4 on field goal attempts and converting both point after tries. Even more impressive than his accuracy was the distance he was forced to kick from in the game. During the first quarter Giffen legged out a career-best 51 yard field goal, only to set a new career long later in the game – 53 yards. He also converted makes of 36 and 24 yards against the Huskies.
 
For the season, Giffen has converted 80 percent of his field goals and is an impressive 9-of-13 (.692) on kicks of 40 yards or longer.
 
Giffen, and the rest of the Cardinals return to action Saturday when they host rival McNeese. The game against the Cowboys will kick off at 3 p.m. from Provost Umphrey Stadium.
