FRISCO, Texas - As announced by the league office on Tuesday, Lamar University's
Esther Okoronkwo and
Sophia Manibo have been recognized in the Southland Conference Women's Soccer weekly awards. Okoronkwo took home SLC Offensive Player of the Week honors, and Manibo was named the SLC Defensive Player of the Week.
Sandra Nygard earned Honorable Mention Keeper of the Week.
Okoronkwo took home her first weekly SLC honors by scoring five goals this weekend; three against SFA on Friday and two more against Sam Houston State on Sunday. She also had an assist on Sunday, giving her 11 points in two games with just 128 minutes played. She was extremely accurate in her scoring as well with six of her seven shots on the weekend on frame.
Manibo was a central part of the Cardinal backline's standout effort. LU held oppoents to just one goal in two matches and a .286 shooting percentage. The Ladyjacks put three of their nine shots on goal while the Bearkats' 19 attempts produced just five on goal.
Of the eight shots that made it on frame, LU keepers Nygard and
Erin Branch saved all but one of them, combining for a shutout of SHSU in Sunday's game.
The Cardinals return to action on Oct. 11 at Southeastern Louisiana (2-9-1, 1-4 SLC) and host Abilene Christian (8-2-2, 4-0-1 SLC) on Oct. 18.
