GREENVILLE, Texas – Lamar University senior
Marissa Gross recorded her fourth game-winning goal of the season as the Cardinals rallied to defeat East Texas A&M, 2-1, Friday afternoon. Big Red has now been unbeaten in eight of its last nine matches.
The game was originally slated for Thursday evening but had to be moved to Greenville High School due to inclement weather in Commerce.
The Cardinals (5-2-4, 2-1-1 Southland Conference) were held to seven shots by an ETAMU squad, which recorded 14. Gross' goal was her sixth of the season.
Emma Oubrik scored her first career goal as a Cardinal and helped set up the game-winner along with
Sydney Williams. Senior goalkeeper
Keely Thomas tied her season high with five saves.
ETAMU controlled much of the first half, recording five shots and taking a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute. LU's offense was largely contained through the opening 41 minutes but would catch a break when the Lions were issued a yellow card. The Cardinals earned a free kick from Oubrik, who buried a right-footed strike in the 42nd minute to level the match at 1-1 heading into halftime.
Sydney Williams nearly gave the Cardinals the lead early in the second half, but ETAMU fought back to get off eight shots. Thomas kept the match tied, recording four saves, including two in the final 10 minutes. Then, in the 89th minute, the Cardinals capitalized off a corner kick from Oubrik. Williams received the pass and fed it to Gross, who netted the winner.
The Cardinals return to action Sunday, Oct. 11, when they travel to Nacogdoches to face Stephen F. Austin at SFA Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m., and the match will be streamed on ESPN+.
