BEAUMONT, Texas - For the fifth time this season, a Lamar University's soccer player has been awarded the SLC weekly offensive player of the week accolade.
Â
Esther Okoronkwo was named as the SLC offensive player of the week following her three goals this weekend, goals which were pivotal in ensuring the women's team secured their second Southland title in three years.
Â
Okoronkwo proved to be the crucial player on Friday evening; her brace of two goals secured a 2-0 victory for the Cardinals against Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Okoronkwo maintained her impressive form by again featuring on the scoring sheet in Sunday's match up against Houston Baptist. Okoronkwo got Big Red underway with a well taken goal in the 12th minute, her 19th of the season, and helped Big Red secure a memorable 3-1 victory and the Southland title.
Â
Okoronkwo's impressive scoring statistics sees her ranked second nationally for total goals scored in the NCAA D1, just one goal behind Standford's Catriana Macario. Combined with her eight assists this season, Okoronkwo is also tied for second nationally with fellow teammate
Lucy Ashworth for total points this season (46.00), second to Stanford's Macario (53.00).
Â
Okoronkwo will look to add to her remarkable scoring and points tally this season when she and her fellow teammates return to action against border rivals McNesse in the final regular game of the season. Friday's game at the LU Soccer Complex is due to kick off at 7 p.m.
