BEAUMONT, Texas – The Lamar University women's tennis team will continue its season-long four-match win streak to open the season Saturday when the travel to Denton, Texas to take on North Texas. Big Red will face TCU Sunday morning in Fort Worth, Texas.
The Cardinals (0-2) will be looking for their first victory of the season after a tough start to 2019 last week in Houston. The Red and White opened the season against Rice and the University of Houston. The Cardinals dropped both matches by identical scores but had close battles on the individual courts. Newcomer
Bianca Vitale had a big opening weekend of play winning her two singles matches.
For the Cardinals, the test will be to put the first two losses behind them and get focused on two very tough opponents. North Texas enters the weekend with a 1-2 (.667) overall record after dropping consecutive matches to Xavier and Iowa. The Mean Green lost both contests by identical 5-2 scores. The lone UNT victory came in the season opener against a team the Cardinals are very familiar with. North Texas handled a very tough Abilene Christian squad, 7-0, to start the 2019 campaign. Saturday's match will begin at noon at the Waranch Tennis Complex.
The Cardinals will be in Fort Worth less than 24 hours later to take on TCU (3-0). When LU steps on the court against the Horned Frogs they will be looking to do what no one has been able to accomplish to this point – defeat TCU.
The Horned Frogs have jumped out to a quick start in 2019 rattling off consecutive victories against Abilene Christian, McNeese and New Mexico. The only match so far where they have faced any real resistance came last Sunday against New Mexico. Despite a tougher battle, TCU still prevailed with a 5-2 decision.
The cooler temperatures have forced Sunday's match indoors, and it will now start at 10 a.m. instead of it originally scheduled time.
Sunday's match will be LU's final contest of the season-opening four-match road swing. The Cardinals home opener will be Jan. 31 against UTSA. Big Red will host a doubleheader that day against the Roadrunners and Tyler Junior College.
