McCall Named Summer Ball Freshman of Year

BEAUMONT, Texas - Adding on to an already noteworthy summer that featured 10 Summer League All-Stars, Lamar University's baseball program continues to bring in accolades. Rhett McCall was named Freshman of the Year by the Texas Collegiate League.

"Rhett really turned the corner this summer with his development," said head coach Will Davis. "Coming off his freshman year we wanted him to play a lot and he accomplished that, while also playing at a high level. He returned to campus this fall a much more confident player."

McCall hit .361 for the Acadiana Cane Cutters with 56 hits in 155 at bats while hitting 2 HR. He finished second in the league in batting average and fifth in RBIs.

"Rhett really grew up this summer and was a really tough out while his defensive skills improved greatly throughout the summer" said Richard Chalmers, owner of the Cane Cutters.

McCall was joined on the All-TCL team by Robin Adames at Third Base. Adames was ninth in the TCL in batting average, second in homers, sixth in doubles, ninth in RBIs, and eighth in stolen bases.

The 2019 schedule, released on Tuesday, opens on February 15 with the first of three games against LIU Brooklyn in Vincent-Beck Stadium.
