THIBODAUX, La. — Behind two home runs, Nicholls took Game 1 over Lamar University, 3-0, on Friday night on Ben Meyer Diamond at Ray E. Didier Field.
With rain lingering in the area, the start of the game was delayed by an hour before first pitch.
The Colonels struck first in the bottom of the second inning with a one-out solo home run to right field by Jaxon Milam.
Caston Thompson followed by extending the lead to 2-0 in the third, blasting a one-out solo shot to right field.
Nicholls loaded the bases with one out after two walks and a single, setting up an RBI fielder's choice groundout to short by Carter Jenkins in the bottom of the fifth.
The LU pitching staff did all it could to keep the game within reach, striking out 13 total batters.
Cooper Carlgren provided a strong effort out of the bullpen, tossing three innings of one-hit relief while striking out six batters. He struck out the side in the sixth inning.
Carlgren retired seven of the 10 batters he faced, aided by his defense, which turned a double play in the seventh inning.
Chris Olivier struck out seven batters, including three consecutive strikeouts in the fourth inning.
