Cards Sign Top 100 JUCO Prospect

BEAUMONT, Texas – Junior college standout Edwin Jeudy will continue his education and playing career at Lamar University announced head men's basketball coach Tic Price Tuesday afternoon. Jeudy joins a signing class that consists of prep signees Davion Buster (5-10, 150, guard), Grehlon Easter (6-3, 172, guard), and junior college transfer Christian Barrett (6-6, 220, forward). He will also be one of eight newcomers on the 2018-19 roster as he joins a class that already consisted of V.J. Holmes, Jordan Hunter, Mike Kolawole and Laquarious Paige – all four sat out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA transfer rules.

"We were looking for someone who could play the stretch four," said Price. "Coach (Brandon) Chappell identified Edwin, and when I saw him on film he really stood out. He is a very athletic guy who has the ability to guard multiple positions. He also has long arms which helps make him a better rebounder."

Jeudy comes to the Golden Triangle as one of the nation's top 100 junior college prospects. A leader on for Gillette College – a nationally ranked JUCO squad in Wyoming – Jeudy was ranked as the No. 78th junior college player in the nation by JUCORecruiting.com.

A native of Haiti, Jeudy's family moved to Montreal, Quebec when he was six years old. One of the top Canadian products currently playing in the United States, Jeudy averaged a double-double as a sophomore on his way to guiding the Pronghorns to a 27-4 (.871) record and a postseason berth. Gillette won 59 games during Jeudy's two seasons on campus.

"When he came here on his visit, he said that it felt like family," said Price. "He felt like there was a brotherhood that existed with the current players, and he liked that."

A two-year starter for Gillette, Jeudy played in 30 games this past season averaging better than 13 points and 10 rebounds per game. His sophomore season came on the heels of a rookie campaign that saw him score 11 points and pull down 8.4 rebounds per game.

Jeudy also has a long-range element to his game converting 31 percent of his attempts from three-point range. He was also one of the more accurate free throw shooters at the junior college level for a big man, converting better than 75 percent of his attempts both seasons.

The addition of Jeudy comes at the best time for the Cardinals who graduated a six-member senior class in 2018. The graduating class also consisted of the team's leading scorer and rebounder, Colton Weisbrod, who ranked among the league leaders in double-doubles each of the past two seasons. In addition to the loss of Weisbrod, forward Josh Nzeakor is also entering his final season with the team.

"With Edwin having come through the junior college ranks, he is already battle tested and he brings some experience with him," said Price. "I felt it was crucial that we bring in a guy with some maturity – both on and off the court. Once we got to know him, we were not only impressed with him as a player but as a young man as well."
