The Lamar University men's basketball team has gone 2-for-2 to start its trip to Puerto Rico with one more game remaining on the docket. The Cardinals defeated Ana G. Mendez University 87-61 Tuesday afternoon.
Senior
Andrew Holifield once again led the Red and White with 19 points (5-of-7 from three-point range) while junior
Rob Lee, Jr. added 14 points (3-of-5 from long range).
B.B. Knight – who is returning from an injury-plagued 2024-25 campaign – also tacked on 14 after converting four three-pointers.
After a slow start offensively, the Cardinals turned up the heat and ended the day shooting 53 percent from the field and 47 percent from three-point range (16-of-34). Similar to Monday, the Cardinals were solid with the ball taking care of their possessions. LU turned the ball over just 12 times and ended the day with a 23-to-12 assist-to-turnover ratio.
The defense also stepped into the spotlight Tuesday. The Cardinals held Mendez to 37 percent from the field while forcing their hosts into 16 turnovers. Lamar also outrebounded Mendez, 40-25, which places LU +29 on the glass in the first two games.
The Cardinals now sit at 2-0 on the Puerto Rico Classico Tour with one game remaining. Lamar will be back in action Wednesday at 1 p.m. Central to face Bayamon who represents the National Superior Basketball League (BSN).
